In September 2015, with the generous support of the W. Clement & Jessie V. Stone Foundation, the Center for Court Innovation (the Center) and Coro New York Leadership Center hosted Sustainable Strategies, a one-day summit for facilitators and conveners of youth advisory boards in New York City.
Following the Sustainable Strategies convening, the Center produced a report and podcast summarizing the key takeaways from the day. In addition, a small group of convening attendees have continued to meet monthly as the Sustainable Strategies Working Advisory Group (SSWAG).
Based on the success of the Sustainable Strategies convening, the Center and Coro proposed to continue to foster youth engagement in policy making by supporting the growing field of youth advisory board programs in New York City. This is happening in collaboration with NYC Service – a city agency focused on increasing volunteerism and civic engagement. NYC Service has set a goal of engaging 30,000 young people ages 14-21 in youth advisory board-style programs called youth leadership councils by the year 2020. The goal is for every city government agency to have a youth leadership council advising its work, including such agencies as the Department of Education, the NYPD, and the Department of Transportation.
Under the continuing support of the W. Clement & Jessie V. Stone Foundation, the Center and Coro co-lead SSWAG, comprised of experienced NYC practitioners from organizations who have youth councils. Members of SSWAG will offer their expertise in developing and leading these programs through 4 workshops that will be given during the 2017-2018 school year and offered to facilitators of NYC Service youth leadership councils. Each workshop will a focus on a critical strategy that will help adult facilitators new to the work of youth councils be able to support a sustainable and thriving council.
